There's a difference between assertiveness and self-oriented arrogance. Knowing what your boundaries are and being able to respect another person's position are a token of confidence. I really admire the people who are capable of not letting others take advantage of them, but still remain respectful of the other person's wishes. Sometimes although we may feel disrespected by the demands others may put on us, that disrespect isn't always intentional. It's important to understand that although you shouldn't 'put up with shit' from people who are undermining your capabilities, disrespecting your personal space, and other forms of over demanding behaviour from our friends and colleagues, assuming that these acts are malicious before confronting the issues is slightly unfair. Confidence is standing behind your opinion, and that includes your opinion of yourself. So, if you view yourself as not deserving of disrespectful behaviour, then when someone disrespects you, it shouldn't be a personal attack, because you are convinced by what you deserve. Those issues lie in the other persons court, or in the circumstance itself, and could easily be a product of misunderstanding. And the people who politely try to hatch out what the issues are I find very admirable. Confrontation is a good thing, when done respectfully, because it helps iron out these sort of creases in our daily social interactions.
