I've been listening to a lot of 'old school' music lately, and there's something about early rock and roll, Motown, music like this, that really makes you think of a simpler time. Songs like this one, if they were written nowadays would be ridiculed for that lack of 'depth'. Sure bubble gum pop is often under a lot of scrutiny because it really is easily digestible music that caters to a popular taste. But when I listen to this older music, it makes me a little bit sad, because life seemed so much more simpler back then. People were satisfied with pure, heartfelt lyrics. Nowadays everything has become so convoluted. You need some sort of intellectual depth to get credit, and people forget about the importance of feeling, genuine feeling. You listen to these old songs, and although their simple, their musical genius isn't comparable. So today I'm thankful for these reminders, reminders of times that are simpler. because it reminds us that although we may be technologically advanced and a more intellectually driven culture, we still do have our shortcomings. And sometimes there's a lot merit in music that makes you feel good and warms your heart.
